Sweet Sleep

My daughter is seriously the best baby ever. She has definitely spoiled us. She could have been sleeping through the night at a month old if this first time mommy wasn’t worried about her getting enough nutrition. I would go in and WAKE her up in the middle of the night to feed her. She’d be so asleep that I would have to turn on lights, splash water in her face, etc. just to get her awake enough to latch and nurse for a few minutes. Then I’d do this again until I felt she had enough milk. Seriously. Finally, around 2 months old, I decided she would wake me up when and if she was hungry. From then on, it was 5-8 hours of wonderful sleep every night.

She fell into a wonderful routine all on her own. It wasn’t exact, meaning she wouldn’t  always wake up every morning at 8am on the dot, but she was always awake within 15 minutes of 8am. I decided I really needed her schedule to be more predictable, though. So I tried to put her on a strict BabyWise schedule. She did not like that at all, and then that terrible 4 month sleep regression thing hit, too… she was awake more than she was asleep it seemed. I had no idea what happened! I wished more than anything I had not messed with her schedule since it was only off 15 minutes here and there. I had no idea what to do. I was at my wits end, though. I knew how important sleep was to both of us, and it seemed to only be getting worse.

I turned to the Word of God and lo and behold, God has a promise for sleep! Proverbs 3:24 says, “When you lie down, you will not be afraid, when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.” Not only does God promise us sleep, He promises sweet sleep! I started praying this over Olivia every time I laid her down for naps or bedtime. I would also tell her, “God teaches you all things, and He is teaching you to sleep and gives you peace.” I took that from Isaiah 54:13 which says, “All your children shall be taught by the Lord,
and great shall be the peace of your children.”

It was not immediate, but within a few weeks she was back to sleeping through the night! Anytime her sleeping habits start to get out of whack, I will still speak those things over her. Just the other week, she started having trouble laying down for naps and bedtime without me sitting with her for a little bit. So I started praying over her and by the next day, she was back on track. I believe these words in the Bible. I don’t just hope they work. I know they work because God said it. Isaiah 55:11 says, “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” Speaking God’s words over your children will prosper! Keep speaking these truths and don’t settle for less than God’s best.

Happy sleeping!

  1. So good! We have that verse from Isaiah in our homeschool room! I think so often people speak the Word, but turn around and sow doubt when they don’t see immediate results. It really is a game-changer when you know that’s His Word ALWAYS works, it NEVER returns to Him void, but always accomplishes what it was sent to do!

  2. This is such a good encouragement! Elias would have slept through the night at a month old too if I let him. I kept waking him up to feed him. Then around 6 weeks, I managed to sleep through my alarm one night, and he slept the entire night. I finally just let him sleep. We have no great routine, but I do try to get him down for two naps a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Sometimes they are 3 hours, sometimes 30 minutes. In fact, I’m watching h right now to try and get him to sleep, and this really encouraged me to pray and speak over him. Definitely God-ordained!
